I celebrated my 22nd birthday in Mallorca, Isla Baleares, Spain.
Fun fact: I thought I had booked my plane ticket for Las Palmas, located in the Canary Islands, NOT Palma de Mallorca. Imagine my surprise showing up at the airport…
But what a great surprise (minus re-booking accommodation and whatnot) because Mallorca is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.

What I Wish I Knew Before Going:
- The off-season means there will be no night life. Which normally wouldn’t matter to me… but it was my birthday.
- The city of Palma is not impressive. It’s great as a home-base but please do not spend more than a day there when the rest of the island is so much more interesting and beautiful!
- The traditional Mallorcan pastry, ensaimadas, are made with pork lard; sweets that taste like pork are not my thing.
- The 10-day bus ride pass is a better deal than buying single tickets
- You don’t have to rent a car to explore different parts of the island but you do (or find someone who can) in order to get to the more remote beaches or take scenic drives
- It can get chilly after the sun sets (when it’s not summer)! Bring at least a small sweater with you
