FOOD GUIDE: Washington D.C.

Washington, d.c. has some really great food. The city has a plethora of good Ethiopian food, East coast specialties like bagels, pizza and seafood, and tasty Middle Eastern cuisine.

But for me, a bread addict, the standout food spots are definitely the FRENCH BAKERIES scattered throughout the city.

I love love love boulangeries (that were all too seductive when I was in France), but the USA just doesn’t have a European level bakery culture 😦

Enter: Washington, d.c.

While the bakeries in DC do not live up to European standards, they do the trick considering that DC is a 2-hour flight from where I live as opposed to taking the 8-hour flight to Paris!

So a lot of my food recommendations below are bakeries, but some are not.

Because as much as I wish otherwise, a girl cannot survive on bread and pastries only 😦

Therefore, I was obligated to go to food spots that weren’t bakeries. And some of them made the list… check them out below.

P.S. If you want to know how I select the food places I deem worthy as “recommendations”, I wrote a short article about my food spot selection process here. But if you want the summary, I gotchu:

  1. Must not be a fast food chain. Priority to small, locally owned businesses
  2. The food must be notably unique (hard to find anywhere else), or of impressively high quality.
  3. The online reviews must be 4 stars or above. Preferably, 4.5 starts or above.
  4. The food spot must be a truly standout place that I wouldn’t hesitate to eat at again

Without further ado, here are my highly recommended food spots in Washington DC:

A hidden bakery in a literal alley. Had the best baguette of my life here (in the USA)

Really good bagels.

An aesthetically pleasing cafe and bakery owned and run by 2 Ukrainian sisters.

They have really unique and high quality  food items here!

A good French patisserie downtown.

A small, residential bakery that has some great bread options.

A cute, Middle Eastern bakery that has a tempting selection of savory and sweet pastries.
